Know Your Onions - Over the past few weeks, Gemini class has had the fantastic opportunity to take part in Know Your Onions, a four-part programme delivered by School Food Matters. The programme encourages children to think about where their food comes from, learn how to grow their own produce, and develop confidence in preparing and selling healthy food.

Our journey began in the school garden, where students rolled up their sleeves and planted a variety of seeds. Their hard work and patience paid off, with a successful harvest of potatoes, chard and beetroot. It was wonderful for students to see first-hand how food grows from tiny seeds into fresh vegetables ready to eat.

The second session took us to a community growing garden in King's Cross. Unfortunately, we picked the wettest day imaginable, with the heavens opening shortly after we arrived! Despite getting absolutely soaked, the students remained positive and enthusiastic. They sorted seeds, planted herbs, and learned more about the importance of community growing projects. Their resilience and determination were impressive, proving that a little rain wasn't going to stop their learning.

Our third session was a real highlight. Sharon, one of School Food Matters' talented food teachers, led a hands-on cooking workshop where students prepared delicious cauliflower fritters. They also made a fresh green salad and homemade tzatziki, using the entire cauliflower to minimise food waste. The session was a great opportunity to learn new cooking skills while exploring how every part of a vegetable can be put to good use. The programme concluded with a trip to Inverness Street Market, where students harvested the produce they had grown and sold it alongside homemade chutneys and baked goods. They embraced the challenge brilliantly, demonstrating excellent customer service skills, confidently speaking to members of the public, handling transactions, and promoting their product with enthusiasm.

We are incredibly proud of everything the Gemini students achieved throughout the programme. They developed gardening, cooking and enterprise skills, while learning valuable lessons about sustainability, healthy eating and where our food comes from. A huge thank you to School Food Matters and Sharon for providing such an inspiring and memorable experience.
