Our Behaviour Ethos and Nurture Approach
At Harmood, our nurture approach focuses on supporting our students to develop the skills they need to become confident and independent learners within a group setting.
Key Strands of Nurture at Harmood School
- The Environment
- Structures, Routines and Transitions
- The Quality of Relationships – Expectations, Praise and Consequences
- Language
At Harmood we aim to
- show resilience in our learning
- self-regulate our behaviour and feelings
- show kindness and respect to ourselves and others.
We respond to our young people based on their emotional and social stage of development – rather than based on their chronological age. Our students are given opportunities to revisit the developmental stages they may have missed in their formative attachment relationships.
To enable our students to become independent, they first have to learn to be dependent. They must learn to rely on and trust adults who are responsible and consistent, before they can become responsible and consistent in their own behaviours.
Once these key strands of nurture are in place, our students can begin to engage and make progress in their learning and personal development.
