This summer term our year 11 art student, Andy, completed his third and final unit for his L1 Art & Design BTEC Certificate. The final assignment for this photography unit challenged him to produce a series of photos on the theme of ‘Fragments’. Andy created a mindmap and took an initial photoshoot to help him generate ideas. From his first images he decided he really liked the idea of focusing on fragments of people’s faces so he researched artists; Brno del Zou and David Hockney and experimented with their method of creating multi-photo portraits. For his final presentation he decided to create a very original series of fragmented portraits using a broken mirror.

Meanwhile our year 9 and 10 BTEC art students - Sienna, Muhammad, Ruby and Lexi - have been completing AD5– Creating a 2d art image. Their brief was to create a personal response to the artwork of Brazilian artist, Beatriz Milhazes, documenting and recording in detail their journey of development and experimentation.

They explored Milhazes’ unique ’monotransfer’ technique which involves painting acrylic on plastic sheets and then transferring to another surface using PVA– this was both fun and, at times, frustrating. I am so impressed by how confidently they all rose to the challenge and were able to work through technical setbacks and keep going. They also embraced the opportunity to create a bank of gel plate monoprints which meant they were able to assemble these gorgeous final collage compositions. All the students showed real maturity and sensitivity as they considered how best to use contrast, balance and movement to arrange the components of their artworks
